European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
