Our Premier Album of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Premier Place.

On the surface, this album might appear closer to a difficult scholarly examination than the latest popular music album by a musician who just had a previous single featured an international K-pop star. Divided across 4 distinct sections and sung in 13 tongues, this is a head-spinning orchestral-influenced opus investigating feminine mystique, religious ascent, and corporal change, frequently by way of the prism of different women saints. The end of a relationship—a theme handled with raw openness elsewhere—is shot heavenward on this record, supported by the lush sound of a major orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast list of collaborators. The pure ambition alone makes the efforts of other artists look rather modest.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That Lux manages to transcend dry intellectual chin-stroking is almost miraculous, and full credit going to Rosalía. Although this is not the first time project to fuse historical sounds and the present, its ambitions feel far higher on Lux, and the balancing act more pronounced. The element that truly elevates her fourth release, outside of its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and inherent drama, proves to be a core sense of joy. Much like the legendary Björk at her peak, there is a wondrous sense to the vocalist's voice which sweeps you into its whirlwind. When she's breaking hearts apart, you still want to stay alongside her for the journey.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

This playful energy shines clearly during a stirring Italian song about a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four moments. Then, all the music drops silent, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle and a comment prior to a hilariously over-the-top orchestral crescendo thuds in with cartoonish force. The song then segues into the wild single driven by galloping strings, an imposing choir, and a surprise role from none other than Björk.

"The magic of this album is that the listener rarely quite understand—nor want to predict—where you is going next."

Almost each song ends in a completely different point from where it began. A track explores the transient nature of celebrity with a delicate symphony only to collapsing in electronic cacophony. Another, a song echoing the artist's earlier trap-infused work begins out dark and brooding, featuring menacing vocals, before sudden flamenco rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to smooth the song's jagged corners.

The Bridge Of Art & Pop

A key balancing act on the album is straddling the gap between bold experimentation and broad appeal. It is no surprise that it has achieved her first work to crack the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a collection of truly catchy hits. One track sung entirely in the English language swells around a chorus that feels to collect increasingly nagging melodies as it spirals upward. That trick gets echoed on a different powerful track that grows and contracts, weaving multiple tunes as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song seduces with its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it aligns with cultural impact of other breakup songs, lambasting an ex- partner described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing have a painted-on edge, like a storybook character hiding a blade: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

This album is popular music on a grand level, an ambitious reach for high Art in an era of looming artificial blankness. It rejects solipsism for glorious elevation, creating an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its own inherent ridiculousness. It is an abundant well of buried treasure that requires time to completely explore but doesn't seem like a chore. While other major pop albums of the year felt like a meager meal, this record offers a lavish banquet where the guests at it, some tipsy on sacred wine, flutter between discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking grief, and shared stories about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from music's truly restlessly inventive visionary.
