Patients Coming Off Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters
A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such medications should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something flipping and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
